Week 1 - Activities & Materials Needed
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE WEEK
Week 1 Day 1
MIXING COLORS
Materials Needed
- Ice Cube Tray
- Food Coloring
- 3 clear cups/jars
- Medical Syringe or Eye Droppers
- Sensory bin or something to contain the mess if inside (optional)
What to Do
- Add water to each of the 3 cups and add food coloring to make 1 red, 1 blue and 1 yellow (primary colors)
- Use the syringe or Eye Droppers to take colored water from the cups and add a small amount to the ice cube tray, demonstrate how mixing the primary colors together in the ice cube tray make new colors
- Let the kids do it!
SPONGE PRINTED ICE CREAM CONES
Materials Needed
- Kitchen sponges
- Paint
- Cardboard or brown construction paper or brown marker
- Glue, tape or glue stick
- Construction paper (any color, lighter is better)
What to Do
- Add a brown paper triangle cut out to a piece of plan paper or draw with brown marker to make a “cone”
- Cut a kitchen sponge into a circle, dip in washable paints, and stamp colorful “ice cream scoops” on construction paper.
Week 1 Day 2
BAKE COOKIES
Materials Needed
- Cookie Dough or your favorite cookie recipe ingredients
What to Do
- Follow instructions on packaging
TURTLE POM POM ART
Materials Needed
- Pom Poms or Cotton Balls
- 3 Clothes pins
- Green and White Paper
- Scissors
- Glue, Tape or Glue Stick
- Paint (green, blue, yellow)
What to Do
- Attach Pom Poms to Cotton Balls to clothes pins to create “brushes”
- Dip pom poms “brushes” in paint and stamp them onto white paper, Cut into oval before or after painting to make the turtle’s shell!
- Give the little ones green construction paper cutouts for the head, legs and tail to glue to their shell before or afterwards (or attach the shell to a piece of paper and draw the turtle body around it).
Week 1 Day 3
POM POM RAINBOWS
Materials Needed
What to Do
- Cut the cardboard into the shape of a rainbow
- Put glue in arches across rainbow - 3-5 arches/rows
- Have kids stick pom poms to the rainbow shape
LETTER/SHAPE PRACTICE
Materials Needed
What to Do
- Divide the paper into squares, the same number of squares as letters in your child’s name.
- In the upper left hand corner of each square write one letter of your child's name
- Have them draw the same letter in that square
- For younger kids, do different shapes in each square and have them practice drawing the shape or find an object that is the same shape to put in the square.
Week 1 Day 4
OIL & WATER EXPERIMENT
Materials Needed
- Baby Oil (or any clear oil)
- Food Coloring
- Water
- Eye Droppers/Pipettes
- Small clear cups/bowls (or ice cube tray)
- Clear bowl/container
What to Do
- Fill the bowl with oil, a shallow amount is fine.
- In a small cup combine 3-5 drops of food coloring with water and mix, using one cup for each color of water that you wish to make.
- Give kids pipettes and have them squirt the varying colors of water into the bowl of oil.
- What happens? The water and oil do not mix. Instead, amazing effects are produced!
VANISHING WORDS
Materials Needed
- Chalkboard
- Chalk
- Paint brush or Q-Tips
- Water
What to Do
- Write common words or names on a chalkboard
- Have the kids trace the words to practice letter writing using water/paint brush or q-tip so the words disappear as they trace them.
